It has a prestolite disturber, positive ground, is it an idea to go for the electronic ignition? By the nature of what they do (RESIST the flow of current) resistors typically get HOT in use. James, the resistor on the back of the ignition switch limits primary ignition current to a value thats safe for the breaker points and coil. Last time the only way I could get it started was squirt gas into cylinders and put plugs back in and was able to get it going, then ran fine, but then let it sit for two months and same thing again won't start.
